ELIZABETH I 1558–1603

Elizabeth I, the last of the Tudors, inherited her father’s intellect, reading the classics and history books as well as speaking at least six languages. She liked to write poetry and could play the lute and the virginals. She also enjoyed horse riding and hunting. A more moderate Protestant than her brother, she undid the Church legislation imposed by Mary I. In foreign policy Elizabeth sent an army to help the French Protestants after the massacre of the Huguenots and her navy successfully defeated the Spanish Armada. Hers was an era of great adventurers – John Hawkins, Francis Drake, Walter Raleigh – as well as of cultural icons including Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Philip Sidney, Edmund Spencer and Francis Bacon.
